How to adjust how links work in Teams

When you click on a link in Teams, if enabled, it can open the files in a way that you might not appreciate. For example

  1. When clicking on a browser link it might open in Edge not your preferred browser

  2. When clicking on a document (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) it might open in Teams instead of the appropriate desktop app

  3. When opening a link, a separate sidebar will open with the conversation that you were reading when you click on the link. It will look like this:

If you do not want Option 1 and 2 features, you can turn it off by doing the following:

  • In Teams, top right next to your initials, click on the ““ and select Settings

  • Select Files and links on the right

  • Change the option for File open preferences

  • Change the option for links open preference

  • Press right arrow to back out and save the changes.

If you do not want Option 3, you can turn it off by doing the following

  • In Edge, top right next to your initials, click on the ““ and select Settings

  • Select Sidebar on the left

  • Select Teams in the middle

  • Turn off the the feature that says Automatically open Teams chat context in the side pane

  • Press right arrow to back out and save the changes.
