Moodle - Reducing the Number of Forum Notification Emails

Several techniques can be used to reduce the number of forum notification emails.

Please avoid marking forum emails as spam to stop receiving them, as this may signal to your email provider that it should block RRU forum emails for all students. Instead, adjust your forum settings as explained here.

Email Digest

Receive a single, daily email that is a compilation of all the posts in all courses for that day in one email at about 5pm pacific time.

  1. In Moodle, select the User menu at the top right and select Preferences.
  2. Select Forum preferences.
  3. Set Email digest type to Complete or Subjects and select the Save changes button.

Unsubscribe From a Forum

You can unsubscribe from forums except for instructor announcements or instructor news forums.

When you're subscribed to a forum you'll receive notifications when people post to any of the discussions in that forum. Here's how to unsubscribe from a forum:

  1. Navigate to the Moodle forum.
  2. Select the Unsubscribe from Forum button to the right of the Add discussion topic button.

Follow these steps to quickly see which forums in a course you're subscribed to:

  1. In Moodle, navigate to the main course page.
  2. On the right in the Activities Block, select Forums. (it's possible some courses might not have an Activities block. If so, unsubscribe from forums using the steps above)

  3. This page displays all forums in this course and the Subscribed column shows which forums you are subscribed to. To unsubscribe from a forum select the Yes button in the Subscribed column and it will change to No to indicate that you are no longer subscribed.

Unusbscribe From a Forum Discussion

You may want to unsubscribe from certain discussions in a forum but not unsubscribe from the whole forum. If so, here's how.

  1. Navigate to the Moodle forum.
  2. The subscribe column has a toggle button that indicates which forum discussions you're subscribed to.

  3. For any discussions you're subscribed to, select the toggle button to unsubscribe.

Disable Forum Auto-Subscribe

By default, when you post in a forum you will automatically be subscribed to that forum discussion. This is usually preferred, but here's how to turn this off:

  • In Moodle, select the User menu at the top right and select Preferences.
  • Click on Forum preferences.
  • Set Forum auto-subscribe to No: don't automatically subscribe me to forum discussions.
