Moodle - Choice activity (staff/faculty)

The Choice activity in Moodle is simple – the teacher asks one question and specifies a choice of multiple responses. It can be configured so that students can choose only one choice or multiple choices and the number of times each choice can be chosen may be limited.

How To Add A Choice Activity

1. From the main course page, enable Edit mode at the top right.

2. Locate the section in your course where you want to add the Choice. At the bottom of the section select the Add an activity or resource button and then select Choice.

3. Give the Choice a name and a description that describes what choice the student is making.

4. Choose the display mode. Display vertically will display the choice options in a vertical list which tends to look better, especially with longer lists of options.

5. Determine how you want the Choice to behave.

  • Allow choice to be updated allows students to return to the Choice activity and change the option/s they selected.
  • Allow more than one choice to be selected allows students to choose multiple options at once.

6. If you want to limit the number of students who can choose an option, enable Limit the number of responses allowed. An example of this is if you're using Choice for office hours and only want to meet with one student at a time you can set the limit for each time slot to 1. Show available spaces shows students the participant limit for each option and the number of students who have choosen that option so far. Each option can be set to a specific limit.

7. Enter the options that you want students to choose from. Select Add 3 field(s) to form if you need additional options.

8. Expand the results heading and consider the Publish results options. These options determine if and when students see the choices that everyone has made. If the choices are private then leave it at the default of Do not publish results to students. If you want students to always see the choices that everyone has made select Always show results to students.

When you're done select Save and display.
