Wireless Access Speed Issues

Sometimes, the wireless network on campus in a specific area can become slow. This is mainly due to the quantity of devices connecting to the local access points. Here are some tips to speed up your connection.

  • Many classrooms have multiple access (AP) points however in a classroom most students can have 2 and sometimes more devices connected to wireless at the same time. We strongly recommend that everyone turn off Wifi on all devices not being used. This can include smartphones, laptops, tablets and even smart watches.
  • Make sure that others are not using data sharing on their mobile devices. These personal shared connections are using the same channels as our WiFi and therefore can interfere with AP connections to RRU wifi
  • If you have flexibility, try turning off Wifi, moving to a different room/floor/building, and ten turn Wifi back on. Slowness might be limited to that AP and moving to a different area can force a connection to a different AP.
  • Have you moved from one building/location to another? Some devices may not connect to the new AP right away and continue to attempt to communicate to the old AP. Turn off Wifi and back on to force a new connection to the closest AP.
  • Are you the only one experiencing issues? Try rebooting your own device to see if that helps.

Check out the main page of the Computer Services website to see if there is an identified problem that is being worked on.

If you are sure that the issue is not related to the number of connections but more of a system wide issue, please contact the Computer Services department by phone, email or by opening a ticket online. Contact information can be found on our Computer Services main page.  Visit my.meraki.com and provide us with the Access point and your IP address or Mac Address.
