 Staff and Faculty info

Please note:  if you are using a device that is not managed by RRU, you will only have access to the internet regardless of which wireless network you choose.

Equipment managed by RRU

The intention is that all RRU managed equipment can connect to the wired network (by plugging a network cable into the wall) or the new wifi network and be fully connected to all usual resources regardless of whether the staff/faculty is in their own office or a different office, breakout room, public space etc., giving you the flexibility of moving about as you work.  (Reminder:  This applies only in the buildings where the new network is installed)

A managed device is one that:

    • has already been joined to our network (domain)
    • has a white asset tag on it that says "Royal Roads University", possibly a barcode and definitely a name, something like "L16L001"
    • was setup and given to you by IT Services

If you acquired a device using research funds or faculty ProD funds, it may or may not have a white asset tag and may or may not be managed.  Some research or faculty ProD purchases were facilitated in IT Services and some were completely independent.  We may have facilitated the purchase but there was no requirement for the computer to be managed, so it was not.  If you are using a device acquired in one of these ways, and it's not behaving the way you'd expect while on the network, please ask us if it's managed and we'll go from there.  (Please give us the asset tag number so that we know what to look for).

Staff and Faculty: How to connect to the RRU wifi network using a device that is managed by RRU
  • Select RRU from the list of wifi networks
  • When asked to log in, do so using your usual RRU Login (in the format of 'username@royalroads.ca')
  • You will have access to all the things you currently access while at your desk – O: drive, Z: drive, email, applications that you normally use, etc.
  • This means that you can do your usual work from anywhere in the building; there is no requirement for you to have your laptop in the docking station
  • If you have any questions or problems, please contact the Helpdesk via the online form, by email to computerservices@royalroads.ca or by phone at local 2659 (250.391.2659)

Equipment not managed by RRU

A personal device that you brought from home is not managed by RRU.  A device acquired through research or faculty ProD funds may not be managed by RRU.

Staff and Faculty: Can I have my non-managed computer added to the network (domain) so that I can use it "like a managed device"?

The RRU network Access Policy states that any non RRU equipment that is to be connected to the RRU network requires:

Valid and up to date security software installed;

Operating system updates to latest supported patches and security levels; and

Confirmed by IT support staff prior to registering on the network.

If a mobile device (laptop) is used, user will agree to NOT store Personally Identifiable Information on the device unless the device has been configured with encrypted drive storage

The non RRU device will be registered on to the RRU network the same as our RRU owned and supported devices

Please connect with IT Services to ask us to arrange to help with this by filling out an online request form at the Computer Services website.
