Considerations for purchasing a home-use dock for employees with an RRU laptop.
RRU does not supply computer equipment for home use.
If you have a laptop with the asset tag of P17Lxxx you will only have the older USB ‘A or ‘Gen 1’’ type connections. As those laptops are slated to be retired shortly, we suggest that you not get a USB A connection dock, as they have a slower connection speed and those connections may not be available on future models.
If you have a laptop with the asset tag of P18Lxxx or higher (P19L, P20L, etc) the laptop will have a USB ‘C/Thunderbolt 3’ type port that you can use to connect to a dock that can both power the laptop (if the dock has that ability – minimum 45W, 60W recommended for RRU laptops) and drive the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and audio connections. Be careful to make sure the dock you choose has the right display ports for your monitor (VGA/Display Port/HDMI).
Checklist for USB C or Thunderbolt 3 dock consideration:
Enough USB connections for all your peripherals (mouse, keyboard, webcam, headset, printer, etc)
Audio connections if you plan on a non-USB headset or speakers.
Display ports that match your monitor (s)
Will it power the laptop?
Buyer beware when buying online - remember the three ‘R’s of Reputation, Reviews, and Return Policy.
We have discovered that the Lenovo laptops we have will not support multiple 2560 x 1440 displays using a USB C dock - although it may be possible with a Thunderbolt 3 dock.
