We're Recruiting Cybersecurity Ambassadors!

We're happy to announce that Royal Roads University's innovative and very successful Cyber Security Ambassador Program is recruiting.

What's a Cyber Security Ambassador Program you ask?  It's a program where employees throughout the organization volunteer 2-4 hours a month to help communicate the Cyber Security Awareness program.  They literally become ambassadors (also commonly called Champions, Advocates, or Sentinels).  The Ambassador program helps the security awareness project lead scale their program more effectively, do so at a lower cost and, because staff members are interacting with their peers, increase the engagement of co-workers. And it's fun!  Ambassadors get to increase their knowledge of technology and help their co-workers.

So now you're asking, what exactly does a Cyber Security Ambassador do?  Well, there are a number of activities that Security Ambassadors could undertake.  Here’s some possible activities:

  • Point of contact for any security questions at their workplace.
  • Talk abut cyber security issues at team meetings.
  • Distribute learning materials (posters, newsletters, fact sheets)
  • Provide feedback / metrics to security awareness officer

We do need to be clear though, this isn't an enforcement role.  The primary role of an Ambassador is promoting awareness.  They are not in an enforcement position nor do they have any sort of “authority”.  You won’t see the Ambassadors performing technical analyses, writing risk assessments / PIAs or drafting policies.

Sounds like fun, but "I'm not a techie" you say.  No problem.  Here's what we're looking for in an Ambassador:

  • Interested in technology but they don’t have to be “techie”.  We prefer enthusiasm to technical skills. And besides, we're going to be teaching you the techie stuff you need to know.
  • Can comfortably commit 2-4 hours a month to the program for a year without jeopardising their primary role.
  • Won’t be shy about giving a short presentation at a team meeting.
  • Enjoy helping others.
