Some program pages display a course list that is generated automatically from the SIS.  These look like this (this example copied from the BCom Entrepreneurial Management):

If you edit a program page where there is an automatic course list, you'll see this while in edit mode: (for Cecilia: https://www.royalroads.ca/node/1162/edit)

Other programs have chosen to display "custom course lists" instead.  Here's an example from the BBA program:

If a program is using a custom course list, the automatic update connection is effectively broken and any updates must be completed manually by staff in the program who have permissions to edit website content.

If you edit a page where there is a custom course list, you'll see this:

How to build a custom course listing:

Go to the program page and click on "edit"

Near the bottom of the page, you will see the sections that make up a program page.  Expand the “courses” section by clicking on the ">" symbol.

You'll have two components to choose from:

You can click on "Add Text block" if you wish to add some descriptive text to explain what courses the reader will be viewing. Here's a sample:

And here's what that will look like when it's published:

somewhere you can add text to explain the courses being listed.  Some examples:

  • Heading: Options for entry. Text: You can choose to start in Year 1 by doing the Year 1/2 - Common Foundations option OR If you have already completed the first two years at another institution you can start at Year ¾ - Degree completion option.
  • Courses listed below may be offered in multiple ways (i.e., online or on-campus); however, students in the BA or BSc in Environmental Practice Degree Completion program can only take the online version.
  • For order and dates of courses, please see the program schedule on the Overview tab.

For Custom Course Listing you add a title (e.g., Year 1 and 2 – Common Foundations; Required Courses; Elective Courses, etc.), you can add a description if you need to (e.g., you need to choose two of the following courses, etc.), and then you link the courses. See screenshot of sample:

You can order these text blocks and custom course listings however you want by changing the order.

You can delete or duplicate a text block or custom course listing by going to the ellipsis next to the collapse button and clicking on what you want to do.

To delete a course that you have added, you have to:

  1. Make sure the course is at the end of your list as you can’t have an empty listing in the middle of your listing – to do that just change the order of your courses and make the one you wish to remove the end number of your list
  2. Save the changes
  3. Go back to edit and now that the course is at the end of the listing you can just highlight the text and delete it
  4. Save changes

To add a course select “add another item” in the course list and it opens up another box to link courses.  Currently, you have to find the course by title – start typing the title and it will bring up your options.  Unfortunately, if the course you are searching for shares the same title as a course in another program it can be a matter of hunting for it.  For example, Thesis.  There are many programs with a course called Thesis.  You need to select it, save it, go to view and see if the course you selected is correct.  If not repeat process.

NOTE: Hopefully we will have this changed by YP soon – we have asked that the selection of courses be changed from title to course number.
