Gradebook Overview

When grading a Moodle assignment activity, it's recommended that you grade in the assignment activity and not the gradebook. Instructions for grading in a Moodle assignment activity may be found here:

Moodle - How To Grade An Assignment

Grading in the gradebook is needed for grade items that do not use an assignment activity (or other graded activity such a quiz) and if you need to override a grade.

Accessing The Gradebook

To access the gradebook, click on Grades in the navigation drawer on the left.

View The Grader Report

The gradebook opens in the Grader Report view with a list of the students enrolled in the course, the activities & assignments, the students' associated grades, as well as a course total for each student.

To enter a grade, find the activity column for that assignment and enter a numerical grade in the corresponding cell. The box with the dotted line around it is for a comment that is visible to the student, and this is optional.

After entering the grades, click the Save Changes button at the bottom left to save the grades.

Edit The Assignment Weights

Click on the Setup tab to see the weights and maximum grade for each assignment. Max grade is automatically pulled in from each assignment's grade setting.

Overriding A Grade

You may override an activity grade or the course total grade, if needed.

The steps to override a grade are:

  1. Navigate to the Grader report.
  2. Click the Turn editing on button.
  3. Locate column for the activity or course total that you would like to override.
  4. For the student whose grade you wish to override, click the Edit grade button (gear icon) in the column for the activity or course total you wish to override.
  5. Check the Override box.
  6. Enter a grade into the Final grade field.
  7. Click the Save changes button.

To remove an overridden grade and have Moodle recalculate the course total repeat these steps but untick the Override box (if there's a grade entered it will be ignored).
