Although wireless is available in your residence room, most people prefer to connect to the wall when possible because it is faster and more secure.  For this reason, we recommend that you bring a network cable with you.  What you will need:

  • a network card (RJ45) (Most computer/laptops have this card built in.  It is a place where you can plug a network cable into your computer.  For example an Apple Macbook Air does not have a built-in network card so a usb network adapter has to be purchased separately)
  • a network cable (RJ45) (10 feet or so)

What will the network connection get you?

  • Access to the Internet via a web browser, you can surf the web!
  • Access to your Royal Roads e-mail via WebMail:

How do I connect to the internet from my room?

Wired - Just plug in your network cable and the computer should work.  If you have any difficulties, please leave the network cable connected and reboot the computer.

There should be lights near where the cable connects on your computer showing that your network cable is connected properly and that you are getting a signal.

Wireless - Your computer should recognize that there are wireless network connections available.  Select RRU-Wireless (no authentication) or eduroam (requires an Eduroam account).  Since our connection is wide-open, no further configuration should be required.  Please note that both eduroam and RRU-Wireless are NOT encrypted and therefore we do not recommend using wireless connections for banking or other sensitive connections.

Can I bring my own Wireless router?

How do I setup my Non-RRU (Shaw/Telus) Email while on campus?

For steps on how to setup your non-RRU email so you can send and receive on your computer while in residence, please visit this page.

I forgot to bring a network cable, can I get one from you?

Computer Services does not lend out network cables, however they are available for purchase, for a nominal fee, from the gift shop (lower level of the castle) or at the nearby London Drugs.
