Introduction

The Moodle Quickmail block is a block that appears on the right side of your course and allows you to send email to participants or instructors in your course. Quickmail sends email but does not receive email. Quickmail sends email to users' RRU email addresses.

Email that you send through Quickmail can be responded to as long as the following are true:

  • Your Moodle profile email address is @royalroads.ca.
  • Your Moodle preferences are not set to 'Hide my email address from everyone'.

If email you send through Quickmail cannot be responded to, recipients will still receive it but will need to manually enter in a reply email address in order to reply.

Email can be sent through Quickmail even if course visibility is set to hide.

Email sent through Quickmail with multiple recipients will use BCC for all participants, so it may not be clear to recipients who the email was sent to and recipients will not be able to do a 'reply-all' to reply to everyone the email was sent to. If emailing multiple participants it may be best to exchange email addresses in advance and use a regular email client.

How to add the Quickmail block to your course

If you're an instructor, the Quickmail block has not yet been added to your course, and you'd like to add the Quickmail block to your course, here's how.

  • Turning editing on: Navigate to the main course page, click the Edit Mode on/off button in the top right corner.

  • With editing turned on, click on Add a block at the bottom of the block drawer on the right side of the screen.

  • From the list of available blocks that appears, click on Quickmail. (note that blocks already in use will not appear here, so if you don't see the Quickmail block then perhaps it's already in the course)

  • The Quickmail block will be visible on the right-side of the main course page. You can move the Quickmail block up or down by dragging on the four-arrow button shown below (editing must be turned on). After dragging the block to where you want it, reload the page to ensure that it stays there. If after reloading the block is not where you want it again, try dragging the other blocks into place and reload again.

Using Quickmail

Quickmail enables you to email other course participants from within your course. If you're an instructor or staff you are able to send email to students using Quickmail even if the course shell is not yet open. If Quickmail is in your course it will be on the right side of the main course page and will look like this:

Click on Compose New Email to create your email and History to view sent messages.

To compose an email select either a team or an individual from the list and click Add and then type your message. You can also add additional email addresses, and attachments if you wish.
