Week 3 - Today's Predictions for Tomorrow's Internet

This week we focus on just how digitally connected our world has become.

With the explosion of digital inter-connectivity, it is critical to explore everyone's role in protecting our cyber ecosystem. In looking closer at our increasing inter-connectivity it’s pretty easy to see that the trend is to go mobile.  And wireless.  And that can be an issue.  Consider:

  •  Mobile devices tend not to be updated as often as corporate computers where we have administrators actively manage system updates
  •  Mobile devices often aren’t secured as well as they should be.  For example, how many of you have a pass-code on your mobile phone or tablet.  C’mon now, be honest…  :^)
  •  How secure is the data stored on mobile devices?  Is it encrypted?

Our mobile devices are increasingly interfacing with our corporate infrastructure so we need to help you ensure that you’re taking all the steps necessary to be safe when you’re on the move.  And that is what this week is about.

Live Event - Mobile Device Check-up

This Wednesday, October 18th from 12 to 1pm our Computer Services team will be set up in the hallway outside Habitat.  They’ll be there to answer your questions on securing your devices so drop by & see them – they’ll be happy to answer your questions.

And In Summary...

We've added a few more newsletters for you - check them out, there's some great information there:

  • No doubt you’ve heard mention of the “Internet of Things” or “IoT”.  But what is it?  In the margin is a newsletter that will add some clarity to what the Internet of Things is.  And, of course, it includes some advice on how to use these IoT devices securely.

  • The article on Securely Using Mobile Apps is a great read.
  • We’ve also attached a newsletter about “Encryption” that explains, in simple terms, what encryption is and why you should be using it, particularly on mobile devices (including mobile hard drives, data “sticks”, etc.).

  • The day will come when you need to get rid of your old phone or tablet.  Unfortunately, too many people dispose of their devices with little thought on just how much
personal data is on them. In the "Securely Disposing of your Mobile Device" newsletter we will cover what types of personal information may be on your mobile device and how you can securely wipe it before disposing or returning it.
  • Finally, I hate to say it, but the Holiday season is just around the corner.  With that in mind we’ve included an infographic with some holiday shopping tips.
