Problem

When trying to open "Rules and Alerts" in Outlook, you get the following error:

Background information

Rules can't be created in the Outlook desktop client through Remote Desktop Connection.
This only seems to affect Windows 10 machines running Microsoft Outlook for Office 365 or 2016.

Solution #1

The simplest solution is to add the rule from webmail. This ensures the rule is always running. (link)

  • Sign-in to webmail.royalroads.ca
  • Select your name in the top-right.
  • Enter the inbox name or email address.
  • Select Open.
  • Near the top-right, Select Options.
  • Select Add Rule.

Solution #2

Create a new Outlook profile. May reset Outlook customization, such as view settings.

  • Close Outlook by selecting File --> Exit
  • In Windows, click on Search --> Control Panel
  • Make sure you are Viewing bySmall icons
  • Click on the Mail icon
  • Click on the Show Profiles... button
  • You will see an existing list of profiles. Click on the Add... button
  • Type a profile name (we suggest your name, followed by "-new"), click OK
  • Select Manual setup or additional server types and click Next
  • Select Office 365 and type the full email address of the mailbox, click Next
  • You should get check marks to show it was setup and connected successfully.  Add a check mark next to Change settings and click Next
  • You should now see the new mailbox in the list of mailboxes.  Make sure the new mailbox is listed under Always use this profile
  • Click OK
