Known issues with Internet Explorer

Below is a list of the known issues with Internet Explorer especially as they relate to RRU websites:

Moodle no longer supports Internet Explorer

Moodle, the learning management system used for courses at Royal Roads, was upgraded on Tuesday January 28th, 2020 to keep up with the current version.  This upgrade is part of the continual process of improvements to the functionality and security of Moodle.

This upgrade removed support for Internet Explorer (IE) resulting in some persistent issues such as:

  • Certain features are unavailable.  For example, IE users will be able to see all forum post and submit assignments however they won’t be able to start a new forum topic.
  • The display on certain pages negatively affected including being unable to close a notice at the top of the screen and click on most menus.

You can avoid these problems if you are able to switch to one of the supported browsers - Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge.

However, if you are in an organization that only allows for the Internet Explorer browser, please keep reading.

Java not enabled in Internet Explorer

If you must use Internet Explorer

To get the most out of IE on your computer, Java script must be enabledIf you aren’t sure whether JavaScript is enabled on your browser you can check here.  If you have any questions, enter your name and email address and press 'Send Email’.  Now give us a call at 250-391-2659 or 1-866-808-5429 and we can discuss this with you.

If you used the link above to check for Java Script and found it disabled, please follow these steps to enable Java Script:

  1. Click on the "sprocket" in the top right of your Internet Explorer window and select select Internet Options

  2. Select the Security tab
  3. Select the zone you wish to modify. In most cases, it will be Internet.
  4. Click the Custom Level... button. ...
  5. Scroll down to the Scripting section and select the radio button beside Active scriptingto Enable
  6. Click OK to close the Security Settings window
  7. Click OK to close the Internet Options windows

JavaScript is now enabled.

If these options are not available, you will need to check with your local IT department.  It is possible the options are disabled due to a group policy by your organization.  Only your local IT department will be able to assist you at this point.

Moodle Dashboard no longer displays active and past courses

One of the issues is that the Moodle Dashboard in Internet Explorer will display empty tiles.

Enabling Java Script (above) has fixed this issue on some computers, however you should still have access to your courses, regardless, from the side menu.  (if you do not see the side menu, please contact computer services and we can enabled it).  Creating a bookmark directly to your course page will also work and will be the fast way to get to your course.  Please contact computer services for assistance.

Unable to "log out" of Moodle or display Account Settings

The dropdown menu at the top right and left are no longer available in Internet Explorer.  This means you will be unable to log out or change account settings.  Please contact computer Services for assistance.

Unable to remove Moodle warnings listed at the top of the page

One of the ways that we notify students of upcoming Moodle updates or outages is through a warning messsage that will appear at the top of the page when you log in.  This message can sometime take up to a 3rd of the page depending on the information provided.

Unfortunately Internet Explorer users cannot close this message.  It will disappear automatically once the need for the warning has passed.
