Wiki Overview

Moodle Wiki is a shared workspace where you and your classmates create and edit content together. You can add links, files, and add additional pages.

At the top of the wiki is a drop-down menu with the following options.

  • View - view the wiki.
  • Edit - edit the wiki.
  • Comments - view and add comments.
  • History - shows history of changes and who made the changes. Previous versions can be restored.
  • Maps - shows a list of all pages in this wiki.
  • Files - view any files added to this wiki.

Editing A Wiki

Select Edit from the drop-down menu and you'll see the familiar Moodle editor. When you're done making edits, you can select Preview to see how your changes look or select Save to save the changes.

Adding New Pages

To add a new page enter the name of the page in double square brackets and then select Save.

It will take you back to View mode. From here select the new page and it will open the new page in the editor.

When you create new pages and navigate to them, a quick way back to the first page of the wiki is to select Wiki in the breadcrumbs at the top.

If you want to see all the page in the Wiki, select Map from the drop-down menu. From here you can navigate directly to any page and edit it.

Adding Files

To add files to a Wiki refer to the Inserting a File as a Link section of this article (skip the first step where you enable Edit mode).

Creating a Table of Contents

A table of contents is automatically generated if you using headings.

(1) Enter the heading text and select it, then (2) select a heading from the paragraph styles menu and select Save.

You should see the automatically generated table of contents.

Page Locking

Only one person can edit a Moodle Wiki page at a time. When you start editing a page it will lock the page, preventing other course participants from editing it. Select either Save or Cancel to unlock the page, allowing others to edit it. Multiple people can edit a wiki at the same time if they're editing different pages.

Here's the lock message participants will see if they try to edit a locked Wiki page.

Renaming the First Page

The first page of the Wiki is named by the person who creates the wiki, often staff or the instructor. It's often called something generic such as "First Page". This page cannot be renamed once the Wiki is created.

Deleting Wiki Pages

To delete a page, remove any links to the page and then ask your instructor to delete the page.

Your instructor can refer to the Moodle - Wiki activity article which explains how to delete pages.
