Moodle - Adding Files (staff/faculty)

Adding files to Moodle allows you to provide students with easy access to important course materials such as lecture notes, readings, or assignment supplements. By uploading files directly into your course, you can organize resources in one central place, making it simple for learners to find and use them whenever they need.

If you have multiple files to add you can consider using a Moodle Folder.

Users who download the file will only be able to open it if they have the appropriate software on their computers, so it's good to stick with common formats such as DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, or PDF.

Files can either be added directly to the main course page as File resources, or inserted as links within any text area that uses the text editor.

Inserting a File as a Link

From the main course page, enable Edit mode at the top right.

Navigate to the place in your course where you'd like to insert the file as a link. Select the text and select the Link button.

If the file you're adding is a PDF, select Open in new window, otherwise leave this unselected and then select Browse repositories.

Select Upload a file, select Choose file, navigate to the file and select Open, and select Upload this File.

When you're done, save your edit.

Selecting your newly created file link should open it in a new browser tab if it's a PDF or download the file if it's another file type.

Adding a File Resource to the Main Course Page

From the main course page, enable Edit mode at the top right.

You can add a file either by using drag and drop or by adding a File resource. We'll cover each approach.

You can also drag the file into the section you want in the Course Index with the same results.

Enter a Name for your file. Optionally, you can add a description.
