Fix for Outlook not opening or only opening in Safe Mode

This is related to a Microsoft Teams issue recently announced: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-enabling-teams-meeting-add-in-breaks-outlook-classic/

The fix:

  • Save your work then close any open Office applications

  • Press Start button and type Software Center and launch the application.

  • Click the Applications tab

  • Select Microsoft Office 365

  • Click install

Not finding Microsoft Office 365 listed in the Applications Tab?

  • Select the Installation status tab on the left menu

  • Select Microsoft Office 365

  • Click Repair

  • This will take between 7-60 minutes to install. Please do not open Office applications during the installation (Word, Excel, Outlook, ect. Teams is OK)

  • When it is complete, close the Software Center window

  • Open Outlook

  • If prompted to start in Safe Mode, select No

  • Outlook should open as normal

Missing Outlook icon on Taskbar

Some people are reporting that after the installation, the Outlook icon is missing from their taskbar.

To re-add Outlook to the taskbar:

  • Start Outlook from the start menu.

  • When Outlook is open, right-click on the icon on the taskbar for Outlook and select Pin to Taskbar

Done.

Outlook looks more bland then I like

The update seems to reset Outlook to the bland “white” look. If you want it to look like it did before, please do the following:

  • In Outlook. click File --> Options

  • Make sure General is selected on the left

  • In the center, look for "Office Theme" and select Colorful. (or another mode if you want)

  • Click OK

This should make it look like it did before.

Missing Teams meeting plug-in on Outlook calendar screen

This should ONLY be done if you have already ran “The fix:” above.

  • Open Outlook, click on File –> Options

  • Click on Add-Ins on the left menu

  • At the bottom of the middle panel, click on Go… next to COM Add-ins

  • Add the check mark beside Microsoft teams Meeting Add-in

  • Click OK

  • If you are told to close and restart Outlook, do that.

  • The Teams meeting plug-in should now show on the Outlook Calendar.
