OneNote: Migrating to a Newer Version.
OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote for Windows 11 is being depreciated. The good news is that all Office 365 users have the latest supported version of OneNote.
Migrating using the Automated prompts.
If you start OneNote are you are asked to move to the newer version, please proceed.
Press Get Started
Copy the path of your current OneNote files to the Clipboard
Your files will be backed up automatically
You will then be prompted to open the newest version
You might be directed to the Microsoft store, but it should also tell you it is already installed, which it is, so simply open the new OneNote (on an RRU computer it is simply called “OneNote” NOT “OneNote for Windows 10”
You should then be prompted to provide the location of the OneNote files. If it does not automatically find them, press Ctrl-V to paste location you copied earlier.
Once the files are imported your are done. Remember to always use the new version on OneNote going forward.
Manually updating OneNote
If you are not prompted when starting OneNote for Windows 10, please follow the procedure below.
Step 1: Open OneNote for Windows 10 and Sync Your Notebooks
Launch OneNote for Windows 10.
For each notebook:
Right-click the notebook name in the left panel.
Select "Sync Now".
Make sure there are no sync errors.
🔄 This ensures all your notes are saved to the cloud and ready to open in the new app.
Step 2: Find Your Notebooks in the New OneNote App
Once you've installed and opened OneNote on Windows, you can access your notebooks from several places:
🔹 If your notebooks are stored in the cloud (OneDrive or SharePoint):
Click File > Open.
Choose OneDrive – Personal or OneDrive – [Your Organization].
You’ll see a list of notebooks you’ve used recently or stored online.
🔹 If your notebooks are stored locally (on your computer):
Look in these folders:
Documents\OneNote NotebooksC:\Users\[YourName]\Documents\OneNote Notebooks
In OneNote, go to File > Open > Browse, and navigate to the folder.
